Fishing Report:

Aug. 18/09
18 Aug 2009
Rainbow fishing continues to be excellent!! Cannot beat a size 10 chironomid fished 1' off the bottom, in 14-16' of water, big numbers of fish are being landed, with fish over 4lbs being caught, and many stories of even bigger ones getting away are being told. Hot chironomid colours continue to be static bag/red rib, black electra, and black & reds. Guest fishing worms in the same zone are catching trout as well. Trollers are picking up the occasional fish, but fishing anchored, set up just off the bottom is hard to beat!

Fishing was excellent today, many 2-3 lb fish with many fish breaking off fishermen today, at times a slight drizzle but for the most part a cloudy day. Fish were taking large chironomids and smaller ones presented by fly fishernen in a wide range of colors, red butt chronies and static bags did best. Worm fishermen did very well anchored or drifting in the very light breeze, trollers using wedding bands with worm and trollers using flat fish also had very productive day. Hatches were long and covered a large area in various parts of the lake, in front of he resort having the biggest emergance of #10 chironomids. With the warmer weather up comming this week we should expect the bomber hatch to continue with fish feeding very heavily on the emergers. Were still finding large green blood worms in the fishes stomachs so more hatches are on their way shortly. We have  a mid week special for a small cabin and powerboat, give us a call while the fishing is at it's prime during the bomber hatch @ 250-523-9697 for details.

The long awaited BOMBER hatch has started today, fishermen have been getting double didget quantaties of fish in the 2-3 lb range this afternoon. Frequent double headers with some down to using a single rod instead of chironomiding with two rods if alone in the boat. From red to green to brown and now grey as they emerge to the surface. Mayflies were coming off yesterday late afternoon and some anglers were getting them on the dry as they dried their wings, takes were suttle and one had to be on the ball to hook the surface sipping rainbows,
Worm fishermen have been doing satifactory on slip floats in 14 feet of water a foot off the bottom. No one is trolling at this time so I can't give a report.
Sorry for th short report, I'm going fishing!!

The hot weather has finally broke, and we are back into more normal weather for Tunkwa, warm sunny days and nice cool evenings. Guests are continuing to catch rainbows up to 3.25lbs, but still have to work a bit for them. Keeping an eye on the cleaning table, and also showing up in stomach pump samples, on the rainbows, shows they are still  gorging on bloodworms, with most of the blood worms a lighter green colour, and some of them are huge, well over an inch long! Hatches observed on the surface continue to be light, with just the odd 'bomber' sized chironie coming off. Worms set under a slip float, fished just off the defined weedlines continue to be deadly, and are putting lots of fish in the boat, trick is figuring out the 'magic' depth for that day or time of the day. Trollers have started to pick up the occasional fish as well, with Kwikfish and hotshots in darker colours working best, but gang trolls/wedding bands are working as well, but most guests are sticking to the old reliable worm to consistently hook up. Pressure from fly anglers have been light, with most targetting Leighton, but reports indicate, static-bag, chromie's, rootbeer and dark green have been the best bet. As the trout move a bit higher, Doc Sprately's, Pumpkinheads or Micro-leach patterns are getting them. Reports from neighbouring Leighton lake are really mixed, but sounds like it has been a bit tougher, but is picking up later in the aft into the evening. Keep in mind our mid-week special, if you are thinking about coming up this way!

Guests continued to catch good sized, rainbow trout this past weekend, but had to do keep moving to stay on active fish. Fishing was very good later last week, but slowed a touch as a weather system whipped through mid-day Sat., but seems to have picked up pretty good again today. Fishing pressure on the lake is light today. Chironomids(see colours in prev. report) or green bloodworm patterns, seemed to work best. Guests fishing worms are continuing to do well. Trollers started to pick up fish today as well, suggesting some fish have moved up higher in the water column. Leighton Lake has had some good flurries of action in the mid afternoon as well. We are all waiting for the 'bomber' hatch to come off in better numbers.
